Ketchikan City Council cuts back hours at town’s emergency shelter

The Ketchikan City Council has voted to cut hours at the town’s only 24-7 emergency shelter due to safety concerns from neighbors. The city’s annual lease for the shelter, First City Haven, expired in May and has since been month-to-month. The new lease allows 22 hours of operation per day for the first six months. For the second six months, the shelter would be opened only at night.

Sites announced for 7 new recreation cabins in the Tongass and Chugach — 18 more still to be decided

The cabins won’t all be built at once. The first seven cabins are out for bid and will be constructed next summer.
“What we wanted to make sure that we’re doing is providing cabins that are more accessible and reach sort of a broader cross-section of the public who would like to recreate, but perhaps don’t have the physical capabilities of taking a long hike up a mountain,” said Dawn Collinsworth, deputy director of recreation lands and minerals for the Alaska region.

Alaska harvesters and scientists share concern over black seaweed

“The seaweed that I picked had a very distinct strong, strong smell, said Irene Dundas. “There was a discoloration, this light green color. I felt like it had a little bit more metallic taste to it.”

To get any good seaweed this year, she traveled for hours by boat near the Canadian border. Her past harvests, she threw away.

“I was alarmed and very, very, very upset,” she said. “I had no clue what was going on.”
