A new parking payment system is being installed and tested next week at the Ketchikan International Airport. It’s part of the state’s Gravina Access Improvement Project.
The new, license plate-based system will link parking passes to a vehicle’s license plate number, rather than to a specific stall. Jenni Fox is the airport’s administrative supervisor.
“So right now there is a report generated by what stall has been paid for and we have people that go out and verify parking has been paid for. This will be the same system except now they’ll have a system to scan the license plate and it will verify whether that plate has been paid for or not.”
Fox says there are advantages to the new system.
“If a stall number is illegible or if we have a snow event, that removes that issue and now people will just be using their license plate numbers.”
Fox says until testing is completed and the new system proves successful, the current, stall number system will remain in place.
“We cannot do a full test on the system at the airport until we have them installed. We know that we will be installing them next week and running some tests, but we want to fully verify that the whole system from start to finish is working before we make it go live.”
Fox advises travelers to visit the Ketchikan International Airport website for more information and updates on the parking system transition.
