Ketchikan’s three regional fire departments responded to a residential fire in the Forest Park neighborhood just before noon Tuesday. No injuries were reported.
South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Steve Rydeen said when he arrived, he saw smoke and flames coming out of the second floor of the triplex. The one resident who was home was already outside, but Rydeen said his team did make a canine rescue.
“We had a report of a dog inside on the first floor,” Rydeen said. “So as soon as we got water on the fire, I sent somebody over, and they located the dog.”
There had been another dog inside that had already made it out safely.
The home was in an area without fire hydrants, but Rydeen said they were able to get water from their tankers on the fire fairly quickly and had it extinguished in about an hour.
Rydeen said the unit with the fire was significantly damaged, and the one next to it had heavy smoke damage. The first floor unit suffered some minor smoke damage.
The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined, and won’t be until an investigation is completed in the coming days.
