Several new candidates jumped into local races just before Monday’s noon deadline. The end of the filing period came a day after a fatal landslide in town, but both the city and borough say their candidate lists have been finalized.

On the city side, Dion Booth, Dick Coose, and David Dentinger entered the race for City Council. They’re vying for two open seats against Michael Briggs and Jai Mahtani.

For the borough, Janalee Gage filed to run against Jaimie Palmer and Bridget Mattson for two open seats on the assembly. Gage is also running for city mayor against Bob Sivertsen.

The School Board race also became competitive before the buzzer, with Hilary Rifenburg registering for one of three open seats. She’ll race against Alexandra Ginter, Jordan Tabb, and current vice president Keenan Sanderson. Michelle O’Brien is running unopposed to fill a one year term left from a resigned member.

The School Board’s current president Stephen Bradford and member Nicole Anderson did not file for reelection. Grant EchoHawk, who is running for the State House but had said he also planned to run for reelection to his Borough Assembly seat, did not file for reelection.

Local elections will take place in Ketchikan on Tuesday, October 1.
