The window of opportunity opened Thursday for political hopefuls in Ketchikan, with open seats on the City Council, Borough Assembly, and School Board.

Two candidates have already filed to run for city office.

As of Friday afternoon, Jai Mahtani is running unopposed for his second term as councilmember, and Bob Sivertsen, who has served on the council and was the city’s previous mayor, is currently running unopposed for mayor.

Dave Kiffer, the current mayor, has not filed for re-election. Member Janalee Gage’s seat is also open. Gage has hit her term limit for the council, but could alternatively run for mayor.

The Borough Assembly and School Board filing window also opened Thursday, but no one has yet declared their candidacy. Grant EchoHawk and Jaimie Palmer are up for re-election to the assembly. For the School Board, Nicole Anderson, Keenan Sanderson, and President Stephen Bradford are up for re-election. There will also be an election to fill the one year remaining in the term of Melissa O’Bryan, who recently resigned.

Anyone who meets basic residency and age requirements, detailed on the city and borough websites, is eligible to run. The last day to file for all three local bodies is August 26.
