No one was injured when a house fire consumed a Forest Park area home on Wednesday night (Feb. 7.) The single-family residence was unoccupied at the time.
The South Tongass Fire Department received a call at about 7 p.m. reporting a home on the 100 block of Mountain Ash Heights. The Ketchikan and North Tongass Volunteer fire departments also responded to the scene.
Ketchikan Fire Marshal Gretchen O’Sullivan says when firefighters arrived, the home was fully involved.
“Just meaning that there was fire engulfing the entire residence,” she elaborated. “[We] had an engine that was supplied with tanker operations because there aren’t any hydrants out in Forest Park. They were able to get the blaze under control.”
“It was a vacant home,” O’Sullivan said, adding that the house had been unoccupied for several years. “There was a fire in that home in 2021, and so since that time there hadn’t been anybody living in the home.”
As of Friday afternoon, the cause of the fire was undetermined and remains under investigation. The home was a complete loss.
