A proposed amendment to update the Ketchikan School District’s non-discrimination policy is up for a public hearing and second vote during Wednesday’s Ketchikan School Board meeting.
The board approved the update in first reading during its May 23rd meeting after initially rejecting it. There had been disagreement over whether to add sexual orientation to the list.
The policy update eventually passed without adding sexual orientation. It could still be amended on Wednesday.
The board also will vote on creating a Native Education Committee. That committee would provide guidance related to American Indian and Alaska Native programs in the district.
Also on Wednesday, the board has an executive session to discuss ongoing contract negotiations with Ketchikan Education Association. Negotiations have stalled, and will be going to non-binding arbitration.
Wednesday’s meeting starts at 6 p.m. in Borough Assembly chambers at the White Cliff building. Public comment will be heard at the start of the meeting.
