Six Ketchikan students have been chosen to receive scholarships through the annual Sam Pitcher Music Scholarship program.
The students are seventh- graders Genevieve Hiatt and Annie Paxton; eighth-grader Rachel Anne Lomat; and ninth-graders Henry Clark, Abby Gaugler and Josh Ryan.
According to a recent announcement, Genevieve has studied trumpet and piano. Annie plays trumpet and keyboard, and sings. Rachel plays clarinet and tenor saxophone. Henry plays alto saxophone, tenor saxophone and clarinet. Abby sings, and plays flute and saxophone. Josh plays trombone and piano.
The Sam Pitcher Memorial Scholarship Fund was established after 16-year-old Sam’s death in 2003. According to Karen Pitcher, his mother, 71 scholarships have been awarded since that time for young Ketchikan students to attend music programs.
This year’s recipients plan to use their $500 scholarships to attend Sitka Fine Arts Camp.
