On May 26th individuals and groups in Ketchikan were honored during a special reception hosted by the Epsilon Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society. Recipients received the Red Apple Award which recognizes community organizations or individuals for their significant contributions to the education of Ketchikan’s youth and families.
The 2016 recipients are:
- Credit Union 1 – The financial institution raised over $10,000 for non-profit organizations benefitting youth and their families.
- The Ketchikan Harley Riders Association – The group was recognized for its annual “Toy Run” that provides hundreds of toys to children at Christmastime. KHRA is also a statewide sponsor of the March of Dimes.
- David Timmerman – In addition to serving on the Ketchikan School Board; Timmerman has coached youth soccer, junior-high basketball and baseball, and currently coaches softball.
- Steve and Grace Kinney – The Kinneys were honored for helping children and youth since moving to Ketchikan in 1965. They have volunteered as youth leaders in Ketchikan and at Rainbow Glacier Camp, and have been foster parents. They have also been a host family for the Kanayama Exchange Program. Steve Kinney, a commercial fisherman, has hired numerous students as deck hands.
Delta Kappa Gamma is a professional honor society for women educators. The Red Apples have been awarded annually in Ketchikan since 1999.
