A 17-year-old Port Protection girl was killed Thursday in an ATV accident near that community.
Alaska State Troopers report that Paulette James was operating a “dune buggy” style ATV, when it rolled over into a 25 foot embankment with two people on board.
The second occupant was 58-year-old Kenneth Morfeld, also of Port Protection. He was injured in the crash, and was taken to Wrangell Medical Center for treatment. He is expected to recover.
Troopers report that James was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Her body has been transported to Craig and will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy.
Next of kin were on scene.
