KETCHIKAN, ALASKA (2010-03-09) Prince of Wales residents were staunchly divided Monday on legislation that would allow Sealaska to select acreage outside of its current land selection boundaries. The town hall meeting was the first in a series of listening sessions being held on Prince of Wales and around Southeast on the Sealaska lands legislation.

Gateway PERS cost estimate plummets

KETCHIKAN, ALASKA (2010-03-05) The cost of terminating nine Gateway Center for Human Services employees from the City of Ketchikan’s payroll has dropped considerably. Staff earlier this week warned the Ketchikan City Council that it could cost more than $1 million to pull the employees from the state’s retirement system. The cost has since been adjusted down to around $10,000.

City's cost of transferring Gateway increases

DOT seeks input on new ferry terminal site

KETCHIKAN, ALASKA (2010-03-04) The state Department of Transportation is soliciting public input on potential locations for construction of a new ferry terminal south of Ketchikan. DOT is constructing two new terminals for the state ferry Lituya, which provides dedicated service between Metlakatla and Ketchikan.

KETCHIKAN, ALASKA (2010-03-03) New taxes and regulations are driving cruise ships out of Alaska. That according to the Alaska Alliance for Cruise Travel, a grassroots group of businesses and Alaskans who rely on the industry. Cruise Line Agency of Alaska’s Rick Erickson spoke on behalf of Alaska ACT at Wednesday’s Ketchikan Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Subcommittee: Kookesh violated ethics law

KETCHIKAN, ALASKA (2010-03-02) Angoon Sen. Albert Kookesh has been slapped with a state ethics violation over comments he made in January at a Craig City Council meeting. A senate ethics subcommittee found that Kookesh implied that he would use his legislative power to block state funding for community projects if the Craig City Council opposed legislation he was supporting.

KETCHIKAN, ALASKA (2010-03-01) An 8th grader from the Craig Middle School beat out 158 spellers from around Alaska to take top honors at the state spelling bee on Friday. Oliver Price will be one of two students representing the state in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. this spring.

City moves forward with fire station

KETCHIKAN, ALASKA (2010-02-19) Work on a new municipal fire station will proceed after the Ketchikan City Council Thursday gave the go-ahead to continue with design on the project. The council also authorized city staff to move forward with the purchase of a lot near the federal building for construction of the new fire hall.
