An inmate at the Ketchikan Correctional Center who was facing felony sex abuse charges died Saturday at Alaska Regional Hospital after apparently hanging himself with his bed sheet late Thursday morning.
According to Alaska State Troopers, 20-year-old Brendon Sample was alone in his secured cell when he hung himself.
Correctional Center staff found Sample unresponsive, and immediately began CPR until Ketchikan Fire Department EMS personnel arrived and took over resuscitation efforts.
Troopers say Sample was transported to the PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, where he remained in the Intensive Care Unit for the evening. On Friday afternoon, Sample was taken to the Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.
Troopers say he was pronounced dead at about 11 a.m. Saturday by the State Medical Examiner.
Sample was charged on Jan. 11 with sexual abuse of a minor for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old girl.
